Life insurance with health conditions

We are often approached by people seeking life insurance and who have “pre-existing” health conditions such as :

  1. High blood pressure
  2. Arthritis
  3. Musculoskeletal conditions
  4. Asthma
  5. Cancer
  6. Depression
  7. Other mental health conditions
  8. Diabetes
  9. Heart disease
  10. Stroke
  11. Kidney disease
  12. Liver disease
  13. Epilepsy
  14. Bladder disease
  15. And many others

Experien Insurance Services work with many different life insurers in Australia such as TAL, Clearview, Zurich, NEOS, PPS AIA and more. Working with one or more of these insurers, it may be possible to arrange a policy for people with a pre-existing medical condition.  Policies available may include Income Protection Insurance, Trauma Insurance, TPD insurance and life insurance.

When you apply for life insurance, you will supply health evidence and disclose any current or past health issues. The evidence provided allows the insurer to assess your risk for a claim and consider whether to offer cover and, if so, with any non standard conditions such as a higher than standard price or an exclusion. Occasionally, the insurer may decline to provide you with cover. The rules for accepting cover given each condition may differ from insurer to insurer.

Insurers may ask questions relating to :

  1. Your family medical history: For example did any of your immediate family have cancer or  heart disease ?
  2. Your personal medical history: Details of any past illnesses, injuries, medical examinations, medical consultations, operations, medications taken and other information
  3. Your lifestyle and habits: This could include questions such as your levels of alcohol consumption and if you smoke.
  4. Your occupation.

Having a pre-existing medical condition does not necessarily stop you from being eligible for insurance. The insurer may seek further information from you after your initial application based on your health disclosures. With your consent, they may write to your usual doctor for more information. They may also require a medical examination at their cost.

This is general information and limited in its scope.  If you are considering buying or replacing and a Life Insurance policy then contact us to arrange a review for you. We can consider your individual circumstances, goals and needs and recommend a suitable insurer, product and structure to use. Experien work with several insurers and have extensive experience in helping to arrange claims.
